Welcome to the Indigenous Futures Film Academy, where our mission is to empower Indigenous filmmakers through education that resonates with their cultural and creative aspirations. At IFFA, we are dedicated to breaking down barriers in the film industry and celebrating Indigenous storytelling.

IFFA YOUTH FILM PROGRAM

This four day youth film program, hosted in Elsipogtog First Nation, is open to Wabanaki youth (ages 14–30) who are passionate about storytelling, film, and media. Whether you're new to filmmaking or already exploring your creative path, this is your chance to learn from Indigenous industry professionals and build real-world skills in screenwriting, cinematography, directing, sound, producing, and editing.

You’ll also explore career pathways in film and media, connect with mentors, and work alongside other youth from across Wabanaki territory in a supportive, culturally grounded environment. We will be filming a short documentary focusing on the Elsipogtog First Nation Powwow.

📍 Location: Elsipogtog First Nation
💡 All experience levels welcome
🛏 Accommodations available for participants who live outside of Elsipogtog First Nation

Tentative Program Schedule 

10:00 AM - 4:00 PM: Thursday - Introductions, Intro to Filmmaking, Crafting Our Story, & Mock Set Ups 
1:00 PM - 8:00 PM: Friday - Mock Interviews & Set Up, Filming on Set at the Powwow
1:00 PM - 8:00 PM: Saturday - Filming on Set at the Powwow 
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Sunday - Final Day of Filming

"Oskâyak – You Are Not Alone"

The Indigenous Futures Film Academy is honoured to present Oskāyak: You Are Not Alone, the first short documentary created through the IFFA Youth Film Program. A powerful debut written, directed, and filmed entirely by the students of Oskâyak High School in Saskatoon.

Rooted in truth-telling and community healing, this powerful short documentary explores the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma and the mental health challenges facing Indigenous youth today, through heartfelt interviews with Cecile Smith, Calvin George, and Jaida Moore.

The film offers a deeply personal and honest look at how trauma is carried, how it impacts mental health, and how healing can begin. Healing is possible, and we are not alone!
